Upcoming Fall 2021 Fashion Trends

Upcoming Fall 2021 Fashion Trends

As we bask in the waning summer, many of us will look forward to the start of school, possibly a new job,or a new move-in, and colder weather. Not only are there changes about to happen in our personal lives but in the world of fashion as well. Summer highlighted crochet and knit clothing, funky and bold printed pants, long denim shorts, and retro sunglasses. Now we look to the fall and the new trends that are sure to follow.

Are you looking for some ideas for how to keep your wardrobe in season for fall? Below are some predicted trends and staple pieces to follow. Remember that the most important thing is to wear what makes you feel good and comfortable - not what is necessarily in season or trending. But if you are looking for some ideas on how to prepare for the colder weather or for some new inspiration, look no further than the list below.

Already we have seen a shift from last fall in 2020 in the midst of a pandemic before vaccines. We were content to wrap ourselves in our pajamas and work from home. Now, still in the midst of a pandemic, albeit slightly more contained (if you have received the vaccine), we look onward to a season that can incorporate doing an office visit, going to class, or a safe night out with friends.

Tonal Layering:

From what I’ve started to see on social media and fashion runways, tonal layering seems to be a major theme. This takes the appearance in neutral or standout pieces such as wide leg pants and a long blazer. This look takes business casual to a next level because you're still maintaining a professional look but giving it a whole new style. In general, the wide leg dress pants have been making a huge comeback and I consider it to be a staple piece for this season and in general.

Tailored Layering:

Following the same lines as tonal layering are tailored pieces. This also follows the same scheme as keeping the colors consistent with neutral and earth-tone colors. Button-downs are layered underneath vests, over turtlenecks, underneath longer coats or jackets. All of this combined with wide leg pants or trousers, possibly a belt and tie. These looks are not just paired with sneakers or pumps, but rather follows a more academia look with loafers or boyish shoes. This look resembles the perfect Oxford academia vibe and allows for a lot of creative freedom in layering upon layering. This outfit is best for a day out on the town when it’s cooler outside and errands need to be done.

The Puffer:

The puffer coat has been gaining popularity over the years and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. These coats are perfect for the unexpected cold days in the fall and for the long winter to come. Get ready for bolder and brighter puffer coats which are designed to make an entrance along with the same neutrals that have been gaining traction. Along the same lines as the puffer, is the quilted material that has been making an appearance on puffers and other jackets as well. This season, expect a variety of length, puffiness, and colors that can really spice up the outfit if it’s cool out.

If there is anything to take away from this and what to expect for the fall, expect this: jackets and layering. It’s time to invest in a jacket that can be used as a staple piece and keep you warm in the cooler weather, and also one that can bring another element to your outfit. Jackets will always be essential, especially if you live in a place where it gets colder quickly. Whether that’s spending your money wisely on a piece you will keep around for a while or thrift a funkier piece to make the fall for more fun, it’s up to you and your style preference. And from what we can tell, layering is going to be huge this season and definitely into winter. So have fun, find the clothes and outerwear that suit your needs, and get ready to rock your look when September rolls around!
