Summer 2021 Style and Fashion Trends

Welcome to the 70’s! It may be the summer of 2021, but it’s clear that by seeing the summer fashion trends that we have made a full return to the past judging by the vintage groovy look that has inspired many. This summer is full of retro, colorful, and overall fun looks made for you to stand out. Below is a list of a couple different trends and styles making a comeback for your new summer wardrobe. Here is some inspo to help broaden your style and customize it to your own personal style.

Summer Sets

There is nothing easier to work with than a matching set.  Have fun spicing it up by adding a fun jacket or blazer, tote or mini purse, bold accessories, funky sunglasses, and shoes. These sets come in a variety of ways: criss-cross halters, mini skirts, patterns, plain colors, and can be used as a staple piece or on its own. There are many ways to dress this up or down depending on what you add to it, but this piece can last you for many summers to come because you can mix and match the tops and bottoms as you please. 

Crochet!

Throughout quarantine, there was a huge boom in DIY arts and crafts, specifically crochet. On Tik Tok, the trend started as crochet totes and then quickly moved onto clothing and matching sets. If you’re looking for a simple but funky look, then a matching crochet set, tank, skirt, or dress is the statement for you. I find this trend to be especially unique and one of my favorites because this is more sustainable than buying new clothes and participating in fast fashion. Lastly, something else I appreciate about this trend is that it can provide you with a stimulating hobby, so it truly is the best of both worlds. Sarong Skirts 

These fun and cute skirts are best known for their ability to spice up a bathing suit. Depending on the length, this look can be used as an adorable cover up or for a casual day out on the town or dinner. This look can elevate a beach look into a more appropriate city outing. I always find that pieces of a wardrobe that fits different functions are important because they can help you from buying other clothes. This can help you spice up your beach look and also create a fun look for going out after. 

Psychedelic & Patterned Pants 

These loud-printed pants command attention. I find that it is very easy to throw on a bold and wild-printed shirt, but pants are a whole other story. Most of the funky and bold pants found are flared, which gives off that traditional 70s vibe.  These pants can also last you beyond summer and be worn whenever you want. Depending on your shoes and accessories, you can really make this a fun and bold look. This is something that really commands attention, so it may not be for everyone, but if you’re looking to try something new, then psychedelic pants could become the next piece for your wardrobe. 

Standout Sunglasses 

This is considered to be a new essential piece for your summer wardrobe. Choosing a bold pair of sunglasses will last you past the summer and will help pull together your look. It’s also something that can be paired with outfits that aren’t necessarily for summer. The sunglasses of this summer follow a more retro aesthetic, such as the wide rectangular look, but any type of sunglasses can amp up your outfit. Due to the various quarantines we were in 2020 and this past year, we have come to a very DIY summer. This youthful and chunky jewelry began as a quarantine hobby for many who experimented in making clay necklaces and rings. Although gold hoops are considered to be a must for a lot of outfits, finding some chunky earrings can also bring some attention and help pull together your outfit. These fun accessories can help add some color to your outfit and make it pop. These accessories can either be clay or made out of beads and are a sure way of making your outfit set apart from the rest. The best part is that these last you beyond winter and depending on the colors, can be paired with any type of outfit. Like the DIY yarn crafts, this can be a fun hobby to get into and there is a ton of inspiration to be found on Pinterest, Tik Tok, and Depop. 

Final Look Idea: Mid-Length Denim Shorts + Oversized Open Shirt + Mini Top + Accessories

Consider pairing with a (crochet) bucket hat and some strappy sandals for a chic summer beach look! From what I’ve seen on Pinterest, Tik Tok, and various social media outlets, this oversized shirt is either a fun and bold button-up like a Hawaian shirt, or just a classic and simple jacket. Layers go a long way, and adding something over your little shirt, bra, or tank can help this outfit become more exciting for your summer wardrobe. Pair this with a little shirt underneath, some mid-length shorts, and shoes to your style and you have a simple yet effective summer look. 

It’s important to remember that you do not have to have a specific body type to wear these trends. It’s all about what fits your personal style and if you feel comfortable and confident.
