This Year We Are Avoiding the Spring Semester Slumps

I think we should rename ‘Spring Semester’ to ‘Senioritis Semester’. No matter what year you are, we all feel a little bit of senioritis. For those of you unaware of the term ‘senioritis’ it essentially is a way to describe lack of motivation and effort in an academic setting. Unfortunately, it is unavoidable. It's cold outside, it's stressful and it drags on. But this year, I am determined to overcome my senioritis. As an actual senior about to graduate college, this is going to be difficult. Although I think I have come up with the perfect plan to keep myself in high spirits for my last ever semester in college.

One thing I always do is keep myself busy! There is so much more to school than classes. My sophomore year I had begun to join so many more clubs that are on campus, and still to this day I am a part of all of them. Many people really emphasize joining your freshman year, but I don’t think there is a correct time for when you should join. A person's interests and passions change so much when you are in university, and joining clubs is a way to keep busy and try out things you may not normally try. Many clubs have consistent meeting times so this helps create a schedule, which also goes a long way. Moreover, you can also make so many connections through clubs.

Aside from being in two clubs on campus, I also do internships, freelance for some companies, and I also have a part time job. For me, keeping myself busy is a beneficial way to keep myself going. Having a schedule and/or a routine helps make sure that I am getting everything done in a reasonable amount of time. I keep so many lists and calendars on my laptop and in my bedroom to make sure that I am always on top of my things.

Romanticizing my life is a thing that I frequently do. Making a big deal out of small things is always a great way to keep everything exciting, and help push you through the depressing winter season. Coffee dates to go “study” happen at least twice a week, and many happy hour trips to celebrate god knows what. Surrounding yourself with the people you love and the things that you enjoy can make your attitude and outlook do a total 180. You do not need to leave your home to romanticize your life! One night you can invite your friend over, or even your roommate to make a nice dinner together. Making a new playlist for that niche mood you are in, or even turning birthdays into weekend long celebrations. The options are endless, but all of the outcomes can spark joy.

The environment you surround yourself in also makes a huge difference. Keeping clean and bright can make a difference in how you feel. Making weekly trips to Trader Joe’s to buy fresh flowers is something that I always do. I am also always lighting candles too!

There is so much more to pulling yourself out of the slumps than doing  physical things. Your mentality also plays a huge role in it. Taking care of yourself is always the number one priority and it is okay to take an off day. Self care nights are something that I do often. It is so relaxing to be able to take a hot shower and then do a facemask. Being able to conquer senioritis is all about balance. Between yourself, social life, and studies it can be difficult, but once you find the way it becomes so simple. With all the excitement and peace that is about to come, I wish you the best of luck beating your senioritis this spring semester.
