Fashion Trends You Should Follow this Summer

As summer break goes into full swing, it might be time to clean out your closet and find trendy pieces to beat the heat! Some of my favorite fashion trends pop up during the summer, where colors and fun patterns come back into the fashion scene. From runway fashion to social media trends, there are a range of ways to dress this summer. I’m here to give you options to stay on trend this summer and possibly find some new favorite pieces! I did a little bit of research on social media and WGSN.com to pick out some trends you might want to try this summer to elevate a simple tank top and a pair of denim shorts.

To begin with, I want to talk about WGSN’s statement that one trend includes a “Summer Sweetheart” style that includes a cottagecore aesthetic. In simple words, this alludes to pastel colors, delicate floral patterns, babydoll dresses, and frilly silhouettes. Personally, I think an essential item for this summer is a white, ruffled dress since it is so versatile and can be accessorized so easily. The silhouettes for this trending style have a looser, breathable fit and softer fabrics allowing you to cool off on those hotter summer days. The “Summer Sweetheart” look is perfect for the ladies who have a more delicate, feminine style who want to stay on trend during this summer.

For the more girls with more loud and vibrant style, you can still stay on trend too! Another trend that has come back around is the use of a vibrant color palette. WGSN has called this trend “vibrant vacation” that highlights bold colors and retro, geometric prints. This is perfect for the summer, which always calls for vibrant, lighthearted colors to match the energy the summer brings. The silhouettes for this trend are super versatile and can include anything for loose dresses to tight-fitting maxi dresses!

Another trend, one of my personal favorites, is the idea of “business casual”, including simple silhouettes like office pants and white button up shirts, as well as the use of linens and crochet fabrics. This classic summer look is one of my favorites because of the breathable fabric, loose silhouettes, and variety of choices. In my opinion, I have noticed how this style is very European and gives off the energy of a simple “tropical” aesthetic, which I feel is perfect for the summer time. Before I finish this article, I did want to mention some bathing suits and accessories. All of the trends I mentioned have been transferred over to bathing suits as well, so there are options for any trends you try. Many of the bathing suits come in different silhouettes, where both low and high-waisted bottoms are trending and cutouts have come into play!

As for accessories, there is quite the variety of accessories to pair with your outfits! A summer essential is always a pair of sunglasses. Trending sunglasses have a retro vibe, with bigger, more abstract frames. Another essential is having the perfect summer bag. Right now, textured bags are trending, so this means beaded or crocheted bags. Both the sunglasses and bags bring elements from Y2K and 70’s fashion.

To go along with the retro aesthetic are terry cloth (or towel) sandals. The use of terry cloth fabric comes from 60s trends and are perfect for going to the beach or a pool! As for everyday shoes, platform shoes are back in style and all over social media. Personally, if I’m wearing a more simple outfit, adding strappy platform sandals amps up the look.

Keeping up with summer fashion trends can be easy, and can always be altered to fit your own personal style.
