Nykki's "Me Over You" Is a Reminder For Her To Start Making Herself a Priority Again
“Me Over You” is a song that can only be described as exquisite. Nykki released her new single “Me Over You” along with a visually breathtaking music video that was shot and captured over a three-day road trip between the Italian coast and Rome. Nykki is an artist that is able to give listeners butterflies and connect to them through her music. Her lyrics sound as though they came straight from her diary, but at the same time is relevant to what everyone is feeling in their life at the moment. In a conversation with Clique, Nykki shares about how during the process, she opened Herself up to her co-writer about her life, how she is as a person, and how this song is the most personal thing she has ever put out.
CLIQUE: Your song “Me Over You” is an empowering song about self-worth. Why was it important for you to make a song about this?
NYKKI: I have always struggled with not knowing how to say no to anyone in my life really. Every relationship I’ve been in (friends or boyfriends), I always put their needs first. It always ended up being really exhausting, so this song is a reminder for me to start making myself a priority again. I’m not gonna lie, I still have moments when I do the opposite of what I actually want to do just to make someone happy but I’m trying to change it sometimes at least.

CLIQUE: Your song lyrics are extremely relatable and honest. Is that something you strive for with every song, or does that just happen organically?
NYKKI: So far I’ve always tried to put my life into my lyrics - It’s just easier that way. It’s usually me and one more person writing lyrics so sometimes we inspire each other as well. But, maybe in the future I’ll also write some made-up lyrics because my imagination is endless haha!
CLIQUE: What was it like to collaborate with The Radiators on this song?
NYKKI: Absolutely amazing! At first, the music and the lyrics were completely different. I called them a few days after we made the first version asking them if we could make some changes, and we ended up changing pretty much the whole song. They were so open to new ideas and it was so fun to work with them! Hopefully we'll write some more songs together soon.
CLIQUE: “Me Over You” was written during lockdown, do you find that lockdown was a productive time for you and your music?
NYKKI: When it comes to writing music then yes! Even though I was in a girl band for like 11 years before... writing music was very new to me, so I was lucky to have a lot of online sessions with some super talented people who helped me understand the writing process. I love writing lyrics so much now.
CLIQUE: What did the process of making “Me Over You” look like?
NYKKI: I’ve mentioned before that the first version of the song was very different. During the process, I opened myself up more to my co-writer about my life and how I am as a person, and we started using some old lyrics I'd written on my phone in the past. It was a pretty long process and there were multiple calls to get to the finished product but I cannot be more proud of this song, it’s the most personal thing I’ve ever put out.

CLIQUE: The music video was shot during a three-day road trip between the Italian Coast and Rome. What was that experience like?
NYKKI: Messy haha! It was pretty much a big freestyle and most of the shoot was very genuine. Overall, in the video we're just us, having a lot of fun although it was a lot of hours in the car and like 3 hours sleep each night... but at the end of it it was worth it for us!
CLIQUE: Where did the idea for shooting the music video in Italy come from?
NYKKI: Jan Strach (video director) asked me what my favourite city was and I said Rome, a week later we were on a plane to Italy! We spontaneously took a boat to a small island close to Rome for a day and that was the best decision we made. I just love Italy so much so I will make any excuse to go there I guess haha.

CLIQUE: Who are some of your musical inspirations?
NYKKI: Taylor Swift was my first love when it comes to music. I was literally learning English through her lyrics... maybe that’s why I am a hopeless romantic these days! I love so many different artists, I could give you hundreds of names - my main ones right now would be Doja Cat, Olivia Rodrigo, Olivia O’Brien, Ed Sheeran. But if you asked me next week I would probably give you a different list, this is just to give an idea of how much it changes.
CLIQUE: What is your main goal as a songwriter and as a musician?
NYKKI: I would love to write an album and continue being as open and vulnerable as I can. My biggest dream is to go on tour and visit multiple countries. The thought of people coming to just see me is making me wanna cry haha. I would be having the time of my life!
CLIQUE: What do you see for yourself in terms of your music career in the future?
NYKKI: I will try to take shorter breaks between releasing new music. I want to constantly be active on all my socials and keep my audience entertained, and hopefully an album and some live gigs in the near future!
