Maddie Regent On Her New Single "The Wolf" and Upcoming album

Maddie Regent is set to release her debut album On the phone with my mom on May 16th. As a single she is sharing “The wolf,” a mesmerizing track that showcases her signature blend of heartfelt storytelling and electrifying pop energy. With its raw vulnerability and magnetic intensity, “The wolf" captures the bittersweet tension of wanting to move on while still being haunted by the echoes of the past. Co-written with and produced by her boyfriend and creative partner Cade Hoppe, and featuring additional production from Harper James of Eighty Ninety, “The wolf” pulses with euphoric energy and an irresistible beat that demands attention. In conversation with Clique, Maddie shares that “The wolf” is about that anxious feeling that lingers after you’ve cut someone out of your life for not being who you thought they were. It’s a play on the idiom “a wolf in sheep’s clothing.”

CLIQUE: How long ago did you start working on your debut album On the phone with my mom?

Maddie: We wrote the first song for the album at the end of Summer 2023. I had just moved in with my partner—who is also my producer and co-writer—Cade Hoppe, and after writing that first song we knew we had to do a whole project.

CLIQUE: What was it about “The wolf” that made you decide you wanted that to be a single that came out ahead of the album?

Maddie: The first two singles I released from the album were “Sleeptalking” and “You could break my heart,” which introduced the change in sound and direction that I’m going for with this project. “The wolf” made sense as the third single as I think it kind of completes the picture I’m trying to paint of this project. It’s also one of my favorite songs to sing, so I was very excited for it to be out!

CLIQUE: You collaborated with your boyfriend Cade Hoppe on the single, what is it like to collaborate with someone who you are in a relationship with, and how did you decide you wanted to work together?

Maddie: We started making music together about 2 years into our relationship. It kind of just happened naturally. It took a while for us to find our groove, but ultimately it’s been such a wonderful experience. We really trust and respect each other so much, and it’s easy to be vulnerable with him since he knows me so well. I think working with Cade has helped push me to write more personal songs that I don’t think I’d have had the confidence to write with anyone else.

CLIQUE: What do you hope listeners of your music can get out of listening to “The wolf” or your album On the phone with my mom?

Maddie: I always say that I want people to feel less alone. Regardless of whether you relate to the themes of girlhood or avoiding an ex, I truly believe you will take something from any of the songs.

With “The wolf” specifically, it’s a very cathartic song. I have a vision of people blasting it in their car, singing at the top of their lungs while thinking about the person they cut out of their life—and finally letting go of any lingering guilt that came with it.

It’s easy to feel discouraged and lose sight of why you wanted to make an album in the first place, so when we finished the final song, I felt so relieved and proud.

CLIQUE: Can you describe what it was like to write the album? What was your process like?

Maddie: We spent a lot of time in our home studio brainstorming ideas. Sometimes I’d just rant about things, and Cade would pick out lines he thought could inspire a song. It was such an amazing and healing process for me—not only because I was able to work through personal emotions, but also because starting and finishing something as an independent artist can be really tough. It’s easy to feel discouraged and lose sight of why you wanted to make an album in the first place, so when we finished the final song, I felt so relieved and proud. I thought to myself that even if I never released this project, just knowing that I was capable of completing something like this would be enough for me.

CLIQUE: Tell us more about your single “The wolf” and what the song is about.

Maddie: “The wolf” is about that anxious feeling that lingers after you’ve cut someone out of your life for not being who you thought they were. It’s a play on the idiom “a wolf in sheep’s clothing.”

I love women in music and I feel so lucky to have so many incredible women to look up to. It’s not always easy, but the only way to change things is to keep pushing forward and keep creating.

CLIQUE: How does being a female in the music industry in 2025 feel with so many women finally being recognized? Is it inspiring for you?

Maddie: I love women in music and I feel so lucky to have so many incredible women to look up to. It’s not always easy, but the only way to change things is to keep pushing forward and keep creating.

CLIQUE: Who are some singers and songwriters that inspire you, and you would hope to collaborate with someday?

Maddie: Lana Del Rey is my icon! I’d love to write with her or even just be in the room to see how she writes! Another dream collab for me would be Florence + The Machine. I swear her last album, Dance Fever, changed my brain chemistry. I just love Florence Welch's voice.

CLIQUE: What are your thoughts on live performances and one day touring with your music?

Maddie: I’m so excited about doing more shows—it’s definitely a big goal of mine and something I’m actively working toward! I’d love the chance to connect face-to-face with the people who listen to my music, plus it would be amazing to introduce myself and my music to even more people!

CLIQUE: What are your plans with your music going into the future?

Maddie: I’m going to keep making albums that mean something to me and that inspire me! I’d also love to score an animated film one day, so wish me luck with that, haha!
