LexMo On Her New Single "PST"
“PST” is filled with fast-paced guitars, driven tempo, punchy verses and a chorus that shows the fiercely honest singer-songwriters ear for an undeniable hook. LexMo released this single as a fiercely honest way to share her story, unpacking her relationship struggles, laying everything on the table and ending the song asking “Would you even listen?”. In conversation with Clique, LexMo shares that the message behind PST is that relationships are hard, and distance is a bitch. She also shares that listeners can be reassured that they are not alone with this toxic comparative mentality that certain relationships bring out of you.
CLIQUE: Your new single “PST” is now out! What are you most excited for in this single?
LexMo: I’m really excited to perform this one. It’s so high energy and I'm not used to performing with a live band so that will definitely be something to look forward to.
“I love to entertain and play different characters, and I feel like genre-hopping embodies this best. I love getting into that bad bitch mode for songs like “I’m The Worst (but I love myself)” and then stripping down completely and showing my vulnerable side with songs like “PST” and “Think of Me.””
CLIQUE: In this song, you refuse to be confined to a single genre and channel your alt-rock and pop-punk alter ego. What is it about exploring genres that fascinates you?
LexMo: I love to entertain and play different characters, and I feel like genre-hopping embodies this best. I love getting into that bad bitch mode for songs like “I’m The Worst (but I love myself)” and then stripping down completely and showing my vulnerable side with songs like “PST” and “Think of Me.” It keeps me on my toes and gives my creativity full reign to go where it goes.
CLIQUE: How is this song different from any other single that you have released?
LexMo: I usually don’t have this much instrumentation or pop-punk elements in my music. I have leaned more towards music that could all be made from a software or plug-in, but with this one we recorded live drums and guitars and that was really cool and made me feel like a true musician.
CLIQUE: “PST” was said to be written “in a total of about 20 minutes.” What was this process like for you?
LexMo: It’s such an honest song on my end in the sense that I'm storytelling a relationship, and I think that's why it happened so naturally and quickly. I just told the story.
CLIQUE: Are there any artists that you hope to collaborate with in the future?
LexMo: I’m releasing a reggaeton EP in 2022 and I would love to collaborate with *big reach but i got long arms* Bad Bunny or Nathy Peluso.
CLIQUE: Can you speak more on the message of “PST” and what the song means to you?
LexMo: The message behind PST is that relationships are hard, and distance is a bitch. What I learned from writing it and what the song means to me is that even though life gets in the way if the emotion and respect is there, you owe it to yourself to try. I didn't want to run the risk of missing out on something amazing just because it wasn’t ideal and perfect. Besides, what's the fun in ideal and perfect? NOT MUCH
CLIQUE: You have previously directed your own music videos. Do you like having that sort of creative control over your videos and that creative process?
LexMo: 100%. I get ideas while writing/recording/producing/sleeping/eating/breathing and I see exactly what I want in my brain. So I'm kinda (definitely) a control freak in that sense. I see the vision perfectly in my head and I work with people who are close to me and can see what I’m thinking and help me bring it to life while I’m on the other side of the camera. I love every minute of it and when the vision click and the shot hits its almost better than sex but it’s unfortunate for my social life because being a perfectionist control freak takes alot of time and patience.
“Making something that creates a connection with people, in my opinion, is the most important part of songwriting.”
CLIQUE: As a songwriter, what is the most important part of writing lyrics for your songs in your opinion?
LexMo: Making something that creates a connection with people, in my opinion, is the most important part of songwriting. In PST I wrote, “waiting to hear that you found someone knew who doesn’t do all the stupid shit that I used to”, raise your hand if you’ve been broken up with and patiently waited to see who his/her rebound is going to be *alex raises hand so high it goes through the roof*. If you're not raising your hand then lucky freaken you but to me that is something that is just so relatable when it comes to relationships that I hope with just that line, listeners can be reassured that they are not alone with this toxic comparative mentality that certain relationships bring out of you.
CLIQUE: Are there any other genres of music you hope to explore soon?
LexMo: Oh bitch you already know I got a pop trap album and a reggaeton album on deck in 2022. My sad and vulnerable moments have been great and all but it's time to have fun.
CLIQUE: What do you see for yourself and your music career in the future?
LexMo: I see some awesome live performances in the near future and hopefully *manifest with me* those collaborations we talked about earlier or at least some dope ones with talented individuals
