Everything We Know About Greta Gerwig's Upcoming Barbie Film
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig has been signed on to direct “Barbie,” the highly-anticipated big-screen take on the iconic Mattel doll’s story for a while now. Margot Robbie is to play the title character of Barbie herself, and Ryan Gosling has just signed on to play the role of Ken.
Greta co-wrote the script with Noah Baumbach. The film is said to be about “A doll living in 'Barbieland' is expelled for not being perfect enough and sets off on an adventure in the real world. A Live-action feature film based on the popular line of Barbie toys.” The film is on the verge of getting greenlit. If so, shooting would begin in 2022.
“It comes with a lot of baggage,” the Margot has said of playing the iconic role of Barbie. “And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t.’”
