Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande defy gravity at the Oscars
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo received a standing ovation for their stunning performance on Sunday night at the Oscars. Their powerful voices and emotional delivery captivated the audience, leaving a lasting impression and adding a magical moment to the night’s festivities.
Grande opened the performance with the timeless Judy Garland classic, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Erivo then took over with a soulful rendition of “Home” from the 1978 film The Wiz, filling the room with emotion and nostalgia. The two powerhouse performers then closed the unforgettable medley with Wicked's most iconic number, “Defying Gravity.”
Grande dazzled in a glittering red dress, a tribute to the Wicked Witch of the West’s iconic ruby slippers, adding an extra layer of theatrical charm to her performance. Erivo stunned in a flowing white satin gown adorned with vibrant, blooming flowers, creating a striking contrast and a touch of elegance.
Wicked was nominated for 10 awards at the 97th annual Academy Awards, ultimately winning two: Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. The film triumphed over Conclave, Dune: Part 2, Nosferatu, and The Brutalist for Best Production Design, and defeated A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Gladiator II, and Nosferatu to claim Best Costume Design.
Erivo received a nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role, while Grande was recognized for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Erivo, however, lost to Mikey Madison for her performance in Anora, and Grande was bested by Zoe Saldaña for her role in Emilia Pérez.
Erivo and Grande’s musical performance was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the evening, leaving both fans and critics in awe of their vocal prowess and stage presence. Their dynamic collaboration made it even harder to believe that they went home without an Oscar, as their talent and chemistry on stage were undeniable.
