Gabriela Bee on Releasing Her Single "Blue" and Growing Up With So Many Other Amazing Girls in the Industry

“Blue” is a stunning new single by Gabriela Bee. Gabriela sets out to enchant audiences once again with her latest single “Blue”, a dreamy collaboration with renowned Canadian singer-songwriter and producer Powfu. ‘Blue’ is the next release from Gabriela's eagerly anticipated EP 'Stories', which promises to further solidify her space in the pop scene. “Blue” perfectly embodies the essence of contemporary bedroom-pop, blending Gabriela Bee's honey vocals with Powfu's signature lo-fi hip-hop style to create a mesmerising sonic experience. With its infectious melodies and heartfelt lyrics, the song explores themes of love and adoration, which is set to resonate with audiences on a deeply emotional level. In conversation with Clique, Gabriela shares that being a woman in this industry at this time involves a complex process, but she is so grateful to be able to grow with so many other amazing girls who are reaching for the same thing. At times it is hard to be taken seriously but the industry has improved a lot. Women and girls are really being celebrated for their craft and she is so proud to see the current spots at the top charts being taken up by women.

CLIQUE: How does it feel for you to have your single “Blue” out?

Gabriela: It feels good! I’m very proud of it, and I feel so blessed to see how many people are listening to it everyday.

CLIQUE: I know that “Blue” is about the person in your life that brings you the most comfort and peace, who is that person for you, and what else can you add about the song?

Gabriela: The person that came to mind for me was my brother. He’s my best friend and I put him before everyone else. Ironically, blue is my favourite colour and he reminds me of how much I love it because of the way it makes me feel. The overall peace and comfort it brings to me.

CLIQUE: You collaborated with Powfu on this single, how was that experience and how did it come to be?

Gabriela: Powfu is super cool and I’m so glad I got to collaborate with him on this one. I had him in mind for a collab, and I sent him BLUE for him to listen and see how he feels about it. He sent over his verse so quickly and I knew immediately this song was made for this collab.

“It’s a really great first intro to my experiences and stories as a teenager in this day and age.”

CLIQUE: You also have your debut EP “Stories” coming out on August 16th, what can you tell us about your EP?

Gabriela: It’s a rollercoaster of emotions packed into a short body of music but I’m so excited to share it. It’s a really great first intro to my experiences and stories as a teenager in this day and age.

CLIQUE: What is some music that you have really enjoyed listening to lately?

Gabriela: I’ve been going heavy with Radiohead lately. I was pretty into them in 2020 but recently one of my friends really got me back on the grind. I’m obsessed with The Bends right now and I’ve also been exploring some of Thom Yorke’s other solo projects that are super interesting.

CLIQUE: What do you think about being a woman in the music industry at this time? What do you think is positive and what needs to be changed?

Gabriela: Being a woman in this industry at this time involves a complex process, but really I’m so grateful to be able to grow with so many other amazing girls who are reaching for the same thing. At times it’s hard to be taken seriously but the industry has improved a lot. Women and girls are really being celebrated for their craft and I’m so proud to see the current spots at the top charts being taken up by women.

CLIQUE: How has being on TikTok and the rise of TikTok affected your music, and the music industry in general?

Gabriela: TikTok has really been a big help in all of this and I don’t think people realize how much of a golden ticket it can be. If you can manage to strike the algorithm right and hit the 'For You Page', you’re on the right track to the best possible way to get your song out to as many audiences as you can. Of course, it is a process and sometimes a struggle to hit certain numbers, and there’s going to be a lot of trial and error. Whether we like it or not, TikTok virality has taken the industry by storm and is sort of the game we all have to play now. Even if you are a well-established artist who has been in the industry for years, you have to play it too. Some may see it as a burden, but I have come to see it as a way to deepen the connection with fans and make them feel closer to me, aside from just listening to my songs.

CLIQUE: As someone who is Inspired by timeless artists like Queen, The Beatles, and Elton John as well as modern-day icons Billie Eilish and Lana Del Rey, who is your dream collaborator?

Gabriela: My dream collaborator is Billie Eilish. She’s been one of my biggest inspirations since I first listened to her on a flight in 2017. I always thought she was the coolest person in the world. I still do. I hope to follow in her footsteps and meet her someday. Being in the studio with her and her brother is a dream of mine.

CLIQUE: Do you see yourself doing shows in the future? What is your dream?

Gabriela: 100%. I see it happening very soon as well. It’s everything I live for. I had a taste of it while touring with Walk Off the Earth in 2019 and fell in love with it. It’s all I think about and I can’t wait to get back up on stage.

“As I go into this process with a fresh gaze and open arms I get to accept whatever comes my way and not lock in on specific outcomes. It also helps me to notice the opportunities and milestones I wouldn’t have noticed before.”

CLIQUE: What do you see for your career as you go forward and start to release more music?

Gabriela: I’ve been trying to not guess how it’s all going to go with my career to keep the excitement of it all alive. Of course, I have overall goals and ambitions for myself as an artist, but as I go into this process with a fresh gaze and open arms I get to accept whatever comes my way and not lock in on specific outcomes. It also helps me to notice the opportunities and milestones I wouldn’t have noticed before.
