The Only Eyelash Extension Guide You'll Ever Need

How to find your perfect style, plus aftercare tips you may not know

Long, thick, voluptuous, beautiful eyelashes. For many of us, these are the lash goals we can only dream of. We turn to mascara after mascara that vow to coat every small strand and produce a volumizing and lengthening effect. While many mascaras and false lash strips on the market can cater to these very wishes, some of us crave a method that doesn't come with the mess and struggle of applying falsies or the risk that we'll end up looking like a raccoon if it happens to rain. If only there was another solution... wouldn't it be dreamy to wake up every morning with perfectly luscious lashes? Luckily, there is an easy fix that will grant all of our eyelash desires. Enter in lash extensions.

What Are Lash Extensions?

Lash extensions are precisely what they sound like– extensions that are carefully glued onto every lash hair to emanate the appearance of full, lush lashes. Eyelash technicians use a special glue that will hold these extensions in place for often weeks at a time. Many places also offer hypoallergenic products for those with sensitive skin or allergies. After you get the first complete set, you typically go in every 2-3 weeks to refill the hairs that naturally fall out.

Traditional mascara and strip lashes pale in comparison to the durability of properly applied extensions. The convenience aspect of lash extensions is unbeatable–you will always look put together. Plus, there's an option for everyone. There are many different styles, lengths, and shapes of lashes that fit different needs and personalities.

Different Styles of Lashes

No matter your preference, there's surely a lash extension style that will match your wishes. While there are likely hundreds of lash style combinations available, there are a few that reign at the top of the popularity list. Natural, cat eye, and full volume sets are amongst the most sought-after for lash enthusiasts. (Although the specific names can  slightly vary depending on your location.)

Natural/Classic Sets

If you aim for fuller lashes that still have an everyday natural look, natural sets are for you. This style will add just a little touch of drama to your eyes. These are ideal for those with naturally thin or sparse lashes or if you just want a little oomph without committing to so much volume. Natural extensions will give off a subtle glam and enhance your natural beauty.

Full Volume Sets

Look no further if you live for intense glamour. Full volume sets will turn heads and make you feel absolutely fabulous from the moment you flutter your eyes open in the morning. These sets place not only one but two or more individual extensions on each of your lash hairs. It's also possible to have a mix along your eye of one or two extensions per lash–these are called hybrids. The effect of major volume? Feeling bold and daring. For those who love a full face of makeup, there is no doubt that this lash extension style will make your life easier. Having your lashes ready to go at all times will make your morning get-ready routine go by in a breeze. No more struggling to smear on lash glue every day–what could be better?

Cat Eye Sets

So, maybe you're intrigued by the dramatics of full-volume sets, but you still want a softer, more wearable style. It's a good thing cat eye sets can be a perfect medium. Cat eye extensions gradually become longer and fan out as the lashes move to the outer part of your eye. This provides an alluring, open-eye effect. These sets are sultry, flirty, and even have a slight hint of sexiness to them.

Where Do You Go To Get Them?

When looking for an eyelash extension technician or salon, it's essential to do your research. Qualified technicians will be the difference between you strutting around with gorgeous accentuated eyes and a trip to the eye doctor because of an infection. Don't be alarmed by this; just be cautious! Certified artists with excellent training will apply extensions with care and follow all health and safety protocols when it comes to the eyes. Poorly qualified technicians run the chance of ruining your natural lashes. We definitely don’t want this.

Eyelash studios are becoming more popular and popping up in areas all over. You're bound to find one within a reasonable distance from you. After finding a location, read reviews for the studio and stylists. When it’s time for your first appointment, make sure you tell the technician exactly what your goals are. They are professionals, and can help with any questions and offer recommendations.

It's also important to note that lash extensions can become a pricey habit. Most people will find that they are totally worth it– I love mine–, but be cautious about the price you are being charged. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. Initial first sets typically range between $100-$300, and refills are usually somewhere in the $100-$200 range. Of course, the price you pay will depend on the set you desire, your location, and the studio/lash artist. Some advice? If you see someone advertising a full volume set for $30, I'd run. Keeping your natural lashes healthy and as damage-free as possible is crucial in this process. Paying more for a qualified technician is 100% worthwhile.

So...You Got Extensions! Now What?

Congratulations! You have now spent a relaxing two hours laying down while someone tends to your every lash need. Now that you've left the appointment, the most critical time has come. Caring for your new extensions is key in lengthening your lashes' longevity and ensuring your real hairs underneath stay intact. Here are some tips to keep your lashes looking fresh and fierce for as long as possible:

Wash Your Lashes- Sounds strange, right? Although you probably never thought you'd have to add "washing eyelashes" to your care routine, this step is vital. Cleansing your dazzling extensions at least once a day will help to stop bacteria and dirt from building up on your lash line and follicles, which can cause infections. If you wear makeup, this is an essential practice as eye products can build up over time.

To properly cleanse your lashes, you can use baby shampoo, or any special eyelash wash your technician recommends. As the glue needs to dry, most stylists will recommend waiting at least 24-48 hours before letting your lashes make contact with water.

Once it’s time, carefully wet your lashes by either cupping your hands with water and blinking into them or wetting your fingers and gently running them from the base of your lashes to the tip. Avoid directly spraying them with the showerhead, if possible. Softly transfer the cleanser onto your fingers and apply the liquid to your extensions. Be careful to not tug or be too rough with the lashes. Finally, rinse the soap off with water using whatever method you did to get them wet in the first place.

The result? Squeaky clean, flourishing lashes that are ready to go.

Brush The Lashes- Yet another task you never thought would make its way into your beautifying routine. However, brushing your lashes a few times per day will make an immense difference in not just the appearance, but the health of your natural lashes. Carefully brushing through your extensions with a simple spoolie will untangle any knots and keep the extensions in their desired position. It only takes five seconds, and your fluttering extensions will be sure to thank you.

Also, this may go without saying, but avoid picking or pulling at your lashes!

Be Mindful of How You Sleep- Hate to break it to your stomach and side sleepers, but you may need to adjust your sleeping position just a little to cater to your new additions. Sleeping on your stomach or side can press your extensions into your pillowcase and the friction may cause the lashes to fall out. After all the time and money, this is the last thing we want. But don't panic; you won't have to miraculously learn how to doze off on your back. If you sleep on your side or back, there are many things you can do to avoid this issue.

Using a blanket, or even your hand, to gently elevate your head can be used in this situation. For those who sleep on their stomach, try crossing your arms and resting your forehead on the fold so that your eyes have a small hollow where they will not be squashed into your sheets. If you sleep on your side, try placing your hand(s) or a blanket on the side of your face to raise your precious lashes away from the threat of the pillowcase. It may take a few nights to get used to, but it will become a habit in no time. It will all be worth it when you rise from bed the following morning and look into the mirror to see elegant and full lashes blinking back at you.

How Do You Apply Eye Makeup With Extensions?

Because lash extensions add so much drama and draw attention to the eyes, some may not feel the need to apply eyeshadow or eyeliner. However, many beauty lovers wouldn’t trade the seamless blending of eyeshadow or a flattering eyeliner wing for the world. Thankfully, it’s totally possible to continue wearing your beloved eye makeup while relishing in your lavish lashes. There are no significant modifications that need to be made, just make sure you are extra gentle with your eye brushes or liner tip so they don’t hit, get caught in, or irritate your extensions. Also, take a break from mascara! Layering mascara on top of lash extensions can wear them down faster. Plus, the mascara will be difficult to remove.

When it comes time to remove the eye makeup, don’t forget the cleansing tips we discussed earlier. Make a serious effort to get rid of all remaining products on your eyes. Carefully running a q-tip with eye makeup remover along your lid and lash lines will take away the remnants in a safe and simple way. If done effectively, your lashes will stay perfectly intact–easy peasy.

Now that you know the ins and outs of virtually everything eyelash extension-related, it's time to flaunt your new beauty obsession. Get ready for your close-up: Lights, camera, lashes
