Stars’ Sustainable Met Gala Looks

Stars’ Sustainable Met Gala Looks

It is a well-known fact that celebrities are often the tastemakers and trendsetters in society when it comes to fashion. If Kendall Jenner is seen wearing low rise yoga pants while on a grocery run, it’s pretty much guaranteed similar pants will pop up all over fast fashion sites within a few days. The Met Gala is arguably the event where the most eyes are watching celebrities and the outfits they wear. With great trendsetting influence comes great responsibility, and many stars this year made statements by wearing sustainable garments.

KIM KARDASHIAN

Kim Kardashian turned a lot of heads when she donned Marilyn Monroe’s original Jean-Louis dress, which Monroe wore in 1962 when she sang “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy. Not only is the sparkling dress stunning, but it is also vintage. This most-talked-about look of the night was a second-hand garment, proving that a preloved item can be the most show-stopping look in the room.

EMMA STONE

If Emma Stone’s Met Gala dress looked familiar, that’s because it was an outfit repeat. Too often, we buy clothes for a special occasion and only get one wear out of them. Stone decided to

re-wear her Louis Vuitton wedding dress from 2020 and will now have another spectacular memory to associate this dress with (attending the Met Gala).

SHAWN MENDES

Shawn Mendes is another star who went sustainable this Met Gala. Sporting Tommy Hilfiger, Mendes’ suit was created from leftover deadstock fabric. In an Instagram post, Mendes writes, “i’m so proud to have attended the Met Gala with @tommyhilfiger this year. walked the carpet in a beautiful upcycled look .”

BILLIE EILISH

Another big name in the music industry who rocked a sustainable look at this year’s Met Gala was Billie Eilish. Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele, created this unique dress for Billie made entirely from upcycled materials. Eilish explains to Vogue, “I just wanted to be as eco-friendly as possible.”

ADUT AKECH

Model Adut Akech reached into the fashion archives when selecting a Met Gala outfit, opting for a gown from Christian Lacroix's 2003 autumn/winter collection. Going the sustainable route, Akech showed the public that even if a dress is from a previous collection, that does not mean it is “so last season!”
