My first Summer Away from Home “An open mind”
Every teenager dreams of independence, but what actually happens when they finally get it?
A young adult’s first summer away from home is a time in which they gain a certain understanding of the world and a new level of independence. Being alone for the first time, you can truly get to know yourself outside of your family or your hometown. You’re not haunted by memories of summer’s past and aren’t constantly reminded of your younger self.
You are out in the world, and it is yours to explore and learn from.
This year, I decided to stay in Boston for the summer instead of going back home to Virginia. At first, I had my doubts. I knew that my friends would be heading back to their hometowns, and I would be by myself in the city. I also knew that my school’s dining hall would be closed, and I would have to learn how to cook for myself. However, I felt that the experience was worth the risks, so I took the challenge with an open mind.
My first concern with being alone was not having any friends to spend the summer with. Within the first week of summer, I decided to take advantage of my surroundings and tried to connect with those around me. Whether I ran into someone in an elevator or in the laundry room, I would speak with them and try to form a connection. After all, they are also young adults away from home. Finding people in a similar situation as mine has helped me. I have made connections that I hope will grow into friendship in the days to come.
Being alone has given me a lot of free time, so I decided to learn how to skateboard. Starting a new hobby, finding a job or internship, or even working out can give you time to explore the world through a different lens. As for cooking for myself, I still haven’t taken the challenge, but I will have to very soon.
Throughout this summer, I will share my experiences as a first-time young adult away from home. I know there are challenges ahead, but I will take them with an open mind and receive any changes life brings. I am excited to see what these next few months will bring and all the things I learn about myself and the world around me.
Until next time,
Irka.
