AJA On Writing Odes To Celebrating Women and Receiving Feedback From Young Women After Releasing Her Single "Little Black Dress"

In her new single, “Little Black Dress, AJA shares her infectious and punchy melodies and knock out vocals. AJA’s songwriting is relatable and delivered with perfect poise. This single follow AJA’S tour supporting brilliant alt-artist Charlotte Sands where she performed at 17 different dates across Europe and the UK wowing audiences with her powerful vocal talent and captivating stage presence. AJA’s new single touches on the importance of finding the confidence to exist in your own skin unapologetically. Sharing more AJA explained: “Little Black Dress” is about being proud of who you are and feeling empowered by the choices you make. It’s about those moments when you look into the mirror and see the reflection of confidence looking back at you. This song is my ode to celebrating the strength of being a woman and the power of being true to who you are.” In conversation with Clique, AJA shares that she was feeling really low at the time she wrote this song - she wasn’t feeling confident in herslef or in the way she looked. She went into the session feeling really down and writing this song was a way to pick herself up. One thing that always makes her feel confident is wearing a little black dress. Leaving this sessions she felt so much more confident in herslef and was so excited to get ready and put on her little black dress to go out with her friends!

CLIQUE: As your new single Little Black Dress was just dropped, what does it feel like to have this song out for everyone to enjoy now?

AJA: It feels amazing to finally have this song released. After putting so many hours into this song, it is so exciting that everyone gets to hear it! Little Black Dress is all about self-confidence and feeling good in your own skin! I’m really proud of the message behind the song and so happy the song has dropped.

CLIQUE: What was the process of writing this song like for you?

AJA: When I wrote this song I was living in LA. The song came really easily and the writing sessions went really well. It took a couple of months to get the lyrics perfect, but everyone was really excited throughout the process of creating the song and it was a super positive experience overall.

CLIQUE: As Little Black Dress addresses confidence, what was your journey with confidence like?

AJA: I was feeling really low at the time I wrote this song - I wasn’t feeling confident in myself or in the way I looked. I went into the session feeling really down and writing this song was a way to pick me up. One thing that always makes me feel confident is wearing a little black dress. Leaving this session I felt so much more confident in myself and was so excited to get ready and put on my little black dress to go out with my friends!

CLIQUE: How has being a woman affected your relationship with your confidence?

AJA: Being a woman there are a lot of expectations surrounding confidence and body stereotypes. I’ve always tried my best to wear what makes me feel the most confident and try not to think about what anyone else is thinking. And my little black dress does just that! It is flattering, fun to wear, and inspires me to be myself!

CLIQUE: As you write odes to celebrating women, have you received any great feedback from young women that has stuck with you?

AJA: Absolutely! I love hearing feedback after live shows and from my friends. I’ve had girls say that this song inspired them and makes them feel confident in themselves! It makes me so happy when I hear this feedback and know that my music has helped other women feel more confident.

CLIQUE: What is your relationship like with being a woman in the music industry today?

AJA: I feel like women, especially in the past few years and in the pop scene have really taken over in the music industry! I’m extremely inspired by so many female artists like Chapel Roan and Sabrina Carpenter! They are powerful and confident artists who truly inspire me.

CLIQUE: Do you feel like a music video is something you hope to do?

AJA: Absolutely! I love the creativity that comes with creating music videos and hope to do some very soon.

CLIQUE: How do you feel about touring? 

AJA: I love love love touring! It is one of my favourite things about being an artist. Getting to travel to new places and meet many amazing people is so special. I had the best time touring europe/uk opening for Charlotte Sands in May/June and I hope to be back on tour very soon!

CLIQUE: What was a song that you heard growing up that you feel made you love music?

AJA: I grew up listening to a lot of music that I found inspiring. Jazz has always being a big influence on me as well as my top three female vocalists: Ariana Grande, Rihanna, and Beyoncé.

CLIQUE: How are artists that inspire you?

AJA: Strong female artists tend to be a huge inspiration for me. I find myself constantly inspired by Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Tate McRae, Olivia Rodrigo, and Christina Aguillera. These women are not only incredibly talented, but also exemplify the importance of being confident in who you are!

CLIQUE: If you could collaborate with anyone, who would you want to collaborate with you on a song?

AJA: I would absolutely love to collaborate with Kid Laroi! I think he is incredibly talented and I think we could make something really fun together! 

CLIQUE: Where do you see your career going from here?

AJA: I’d love to continue what i’m doing! I’d also love to release an EP before the end of the year, continue touring, and release an album!
