Persuasion Movie Trailer Drops and Here’s What You Need to Know
Alexa, play “The One That Got Away” by Katy Perry. The trailer for the upcoming Netflix original Persuasion just dropped, and here’s what you need to know. Just from the trailer, I can already tell that this witty and sarcastic spin on Jane Austen’s final novel is like if Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag was a period piece. With deadpan side-eye cuts to the camera from protagonist Anne Elliot, this new version of Persuasion is proving that it will be a modern, humorous take on one of Austen’s tragically romantic novels. This new adaptation features a screenplay written by Ron Bass and Alica Victoria Winslow and was directed by Carrie Cracknell. Starring Dakota Fanning as Anne Elliot (Fifty Shades of Grey, The Lost Daughter) and Cosmo Jarvis as Captain Frederick Wentworth, the film is a new twist on Austen’s tragic romance. The cast also includes Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians), Richard E. Grant, Mia McKenna-Bruce, Suki Waterhouse, Edward Bluemel, Lydia Rose Bewley, Yolanda Kettle, Ben Bailey, and more.
Persuasion follows the story of Anne Elliot, a 27 year old spinster who reunites with her old love, naval Captain Frederick Wentworth, after ending their engagement seven years ago. As the two are brought together for a second time, they receive a second chance at falling in love. The film is set to be released on July 15, 2022, and has been highly anticipated since the news broke that it was in development.
Despite the excitement over the film’s release, since the trailer has dropped, the public reception has been far from joyous. Die-hard Jane Austen fans have voiced their criticisms of the upcoming Netflix adaptation of one of Austen’s most beloved novels.
I don’t know how I feel about Netflix’s Persuasion because on the one hand, I completely understand the public critiques of this particular adaptation of Persuasion. On the other hand, I have always loved seeing adaptations of classic literary works in film (Clueless, She’s the Man, 10 Things I Hate About You, etc). I’m super excited to see this new spin on one of my favorite books and I hope you are too.
