Curating a Capsule Wardrobe
Fashion is supposed to be fun, yet sometimes choosing an outfit can seem like the most daunting task in the world. An easy solution to making fashion fun and simple again is swapping out your overstuffed closet for a capsule wardrobe!
Perhaps the phrase “capsule wardrobe” is familiar to you, or perhaps you have no clue what that is. Unfancy blogger Caroline Joy defines capsule wardrobe as “a practice of editing your wardrobe down to your favorite clothes (clothes that fit your lifestyle + body right now), remixing them regularly, and shopping less often and more intentionally.” Essentially, a capsule wardrobe is a small collection of clothing items that fit your lifestyle and spark joy. These clothing items are also timeless pieces that will not go out of style.
Benefits of owning a capsule wardrobe:
It takes the stress out of choosing an outfit each morning.
It also saves you time in the morning.
You save money as you are not constantly buying new clothes.
It’s sustainable! You are avoiding overconsumption and obtaining a wardrobe filled with
pieces you will keep for years, not just for a season.
Your closet will be less cluttered.
Now that you understand the appeal of a capsule wardrobe, it’s time to delve into how you can easily curate your own capsule wardrobe. Below are several tips and tricks to get you started.
Clean out your current closet. Store or donate the items you do not reach for/don’t
resonate with you anymore.
Use pieces you already own to build your capsule wardrobe, then purchase the few
clothing items that are missing.
Avoid microtrends! Capsule wardrobes should consist of timeless pieces that can be
worn season after season.
You can create more than one capsule wardrobe. If you live in an area that experiences
all four seasons, it’s wise to create separate spring, summer, fall, and winter wardrobes.
Examples of items to include in a capsule wardrobe: denim jacket, little black dress,
white sneakers, straight leg jeans, trench coat.
A capsule wardrobe ≠ a minimalist aesthetic. Your clothing does not have to be all
neutral tones and no patterns; capsule wardrobes can include bright colors and the occasional print!
Remember, there is no “right way” to curate a capsule wardrobe. Some people create wardrobes consisting of only 30 items, while others’ capsule wardrobes contain 50+ items. It’s all about what works best for you and your lifestyle.
